Survivor Season 49, Episode 3 Recap: A Near-Death Experience Derails the Game

Survivor Season 49, Episode 3 Recap: A Near-Death Experience Derails the Game

Jake appears in Survivor 49

Survivor Season 49 is back with a brand-new episode–and this one’s a doozy. Over the last two weeks, we’ve gotten to know the latest band of castaways comprising three tribes: Kele, Hina, and Uli. While Uli has dominated almost every challenge with Hina right on their heels, Kele has struggled to keep up with their rivals. Slowly becoming known as this season’s disaster tribe, Kele has the distinct dishonor of being the only tribe to have attended Tribal Council thus far, voting out Nicole in episode one and Annie in episode two. The stakes are higher than ever for the four remaining Kele tribe members this week as they do everything in their power to avoid utter destruction.

The drama is at an all-time high in this week’s episode, with a freak accident putting one of the castaways’ lives in danger and risking derailing the entire game for one tribe. Alliances are also tested as contestants participate in the most grueling tribal council of the season so far. And, as always, one unlucky castaway is voted off the island for good. Join me as I break down this latest episode of Survivor 49 and dig deeper into what to expect in the weeks to come.

Disaster Strikes the Kele Tribe in Survivor’s Latest Episode

The latest episode of Survivor 49, entitled “Loveable Losers,” primarily focuses once again on the Kele tribe. Down and out after losing two Immunity Challenges back-to-back, the four remaining members of the tribe wonder if there is any way to escape the label of being this season’s “Disaster Tribe.” Unfortunately, it quickly becomes clear that disaster is the only thing that awaits Kele. While sitting in the ocean, Jake is bitten by a sea krait, one of the most venomous snakes in Fiji. He is quickly ushered away by the medical team, who fill in a noticeably nervous Jeff Probst. Even though it is determined that the bite was non-venomous, the medical team elects to eject Jake from the game, cutting his dreams short. Thus, Jake, the self-proclaimed “Shoe Bandit” with a heart of gold and a new family member on the way back home, is gone too soon. In his short time on Survivor, he made quite the impression, and his departure leaves a hole in the Kele tribe that will never be filled.

As terrifying as Jake’s ordeal is, it is also important to note what goes down in the other two tribes this episode. Hina finally gets a little bit more screentime this episode (though they are still by far the most underrepresented tribe this season). During a group hunt, MC uncovers the Beware Advantage. Sharing this news exclusively with Steven, MC breaks out into a loose representation of the Camp Rock 2 chant (which officially catapults her to becoming one of my favorite castaways on the island). Meanwhile, Uli also sets out on a group hunt, with Rizo finding the Beware Advantage for his tribe. In stark contrast to MC, however, Rizo shares this information with the entire tribe. Even so, he confides in an interview that he has no intention of sharing the idol if and when he finds it. By the end of the episode, both MC and Rizo have lost their next votes as they await the clue to the Hidden Immunity Idol.

Challenge Time: Kele’s Breaking Point

Going into this week’s Immunity Challenge, the stakes have never been higher for Kele. After losing two challenges in a row, they were already in danger of being destroyed. But, with Jake gone, the only thing standing between Kele and oblivion is the Immunity Idol. After an emotional conversation with all three tribes, Jeff lays out the stakes: it’s do-or-die time for Kele. To turn the tide, they must win an intense water-based obstacle course, which culminates in (you guessed it) another Survivor puzzle. All three members of Kele compete in the challenge. Meanwhile, Hina chooses Steven, Jason, and Kristina to compete while Uli puts forward Savannah, Nate, and Sage.

For a moment, it seems as though there’s hope for Kele as they get off to a strong start thanks to Alex. Unfortunately, things only get worse from there. Despite its head start, Kele can’t get its head around the turtle puzzle, allowing both Uli and Hina to surpass them. Jason leads Hina to victory on yet another puzzle, once again proving his value to the team. This also marks the third episode in a row that Hina has placed first in an Immunity Challenge, making them the clear frontrunners of the season.

It quickly becomes clear to everyone that Uli will complete the puzzle before Kele, dooming the blue tribe to a third consecutive tribal council. As the challenge reaches its final moments, Jeff delivers one of the most brutal but, dare I say, accurate lines of the episode: “I’d like to remain optimistic, but that would be foolish.” He’s right, as it turns out, and Kele loses Immunity for the third episode in a row. There is no celebration for Hina or Uli, however, as both tribes voice their regret at Kele’s misfortunes over the last six days. Still, the two tribes each go home with rewards and immunity, leaving Kele with one of the most difficult decisions of the game.

Tribal Council – Kele Becomes a Tribe of Two

This week’s tribal council was especially brutal. With only three members left of the Kele tribe, the options were extremely limited. Although Sophi and Jeremiah concoct a strategy to vote out Alex, it quickly becomes clear that he plans to play his idol. Ultimately, it is Alex who is going to make the final decision as to who stays in the game and who goes home. While he struggles with the choice for a while, he eventually elects to stick with his alliance by voting for Jeremiah. Sophi, who had hoped to convince Alex not to play his idol, also ends up voting for Jeremiah, making him the fourth person eliminated from Survivor 49.

By the end of this week’s episode, it is clear that Kele absolutely fits the description of the “Disaster Tribe.” It was at this exact point last season that Vuli met a similar fate, with a third consecutive tribal council leading to a heated deadlock unprecedented at this stage of the game. Even worse for Kele, however, they lost two members of their tribe this episode, bringing their total population down to two. While it wouldn’t be out of the question for Survivor to force a tribe of two to survive (poor Steph and Bobby John met a similar fate in Palau), the preview for the next episode reveals that a tribe swap is imminent. It seems Kele has been fully conquered, leaving Hina and Uli to duke it out in the weeks leading up to the merge.

Next Time on Survivor 49

With two tribes completely intact and another with only two members, things are about to get heated in Fiji. The tribe swap offers a fresh start for castaways like Jawan, who ended up on the bottom of his tribe but now has a chance to change everything. Meanwhile, powerhouse alliances like the Uli Four are destined to be torn apart, leading their members to scramble for a new strategy as they join up with different castaways who may want them gone next. Next week’s episode is sure to be a fiery one, as the pieces fall into place for a war between two tribes.

As the third episode of Survivor 49 comes to a close, I’m ready to pick my favorite players from this season. One of the biggest standouts for me thus far is MC. Though her screen time has been limited, MC has proven herself to be a strategic player and a challenge beast. Her tribemate Jason has also been a key factor in Hina’s success, leading the tribe to victory on every puzzle so far. It’s interesting that these two should be the standouts for Hina, given that they were both alternates who replaced other contestants at the last minute. Either one has the potential to go all the way to Final Tribal. I also want to shout out Savannah, who is easily one of the most fascinating contestants in the game so far. Her subtle strategy and cunning have served her well so far, and I expect her to be one of the biggest movers and shakers after the tribe swap and, eventually, the merge. With Savannah returning in Survivor 50, I’m sure we’ll see plenty more of her in the post-tribe swap game. I also expect big things from Nate (and not just because he produced some of my favorite Marvel movies). As for Sophi and Alex, the two remaining members of Kele, the tribe swap will offer a fresh start. Unfortunately, the Kele curse may be too strong to surmount. Only time will tell what will become of the two last members of this year’s disaster tribe.
